Early History Of
Gretna was first settled around 1836 by German immigrants.
The first name for the town was "Mechanikham." It became a
city in 1913. There is a large historic districts with many
well-preserved 19th century homes in the traditional
Louisiana style. new - The City of Gretna is located on the
west bank of the Mississippi River opposite New Orleans.

Gretna is the largest city on the Westbank and has a
thriving Old Downtown area with a Farmers Market on
Saturdays plus several nice restaurants. The new commercial
business district is on Manhattan Blvd that runs for several
miles. You will find a variety of restaurants on Manhattan
Blvd from China Doll, Zeas, Alligator Pete's,
xxxx,xxxx,xxxx,xxx. You also have a large movie theatre and
a new up scale commercial district with a place that serves
benetes and New Orleans coffee. There are also a couple of
hotels in the area including a Holiday Inn. If you like to
golf you can take in 18 hole round at the Timberlane Country
Club on LaPalco Blvd 1/2 mile off of Manhattan Blvd. There
is also a driving range. Membership is not needed to take in
a round of golf.
Gretna Farmers' Market located in historic
downtown Gretna between 3rd and 4th Streets under a large covered
area. The market is open every Saturday - rain or shine.

The market has live music each Saturday and monthly cooking

Festival, takes place the 1st weekend in October in The
Downtown area of Gretna Louisiana taking up 25 city blocks. The
festival celebrates the historic and cultural heritage of this
exciting Louisiana community. Plenty of live music, food, arts and
crafts, rides and fun for everyone. Stages with live music, famous
singers and bands will be set up thru out the 25 square blocks of
the festival. Bring the entire family and join us for this award
winning 3 day event. This is truly a great festival with over
125,000 in attendance last year making this one of the largest and
best festivals in the area.
