Gretna Farmers Market in Old Downtown Gretna, Louisiana

Author: Bill Elsenrath

Every week farmers from Southeast Louisiana come together at the Gretna Framers Market to display and sell their produce. The Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM with fun for the whole family. Everything takes place under a large covered pavilion so the show goes on rain or shine. Come out and enjoy the Music and Entertainment along with some great tasting food. There is plenty of free parking and the market is free to all.

Spring and Summer is the best time to come to the Farmer's Market if you want the best and freshest local and regional foods. There is an abundance of Lettuce, Spinach, Squash, and Strawberries in the Spring and then the Summer crop comes in with tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, okra and eggplant. There are also other fruits and vegetables available at different times of the year. I'm sure you will be seeing some pumpkins in October around Halloween and then the watermelons in mid summer. There is always something different that the farmers come up with just about every week.

There are also food vendors that make their own homemade specialties like hot tamales, breakfast burritos, pulled pork sandwiches, cracklin's and sausage links. Many food vendors offer samples from homemade pies, spiced okra, sausage, jellies on crackers, and much more. We have our regulars that are here every week and then we have our every other week to once a month vendors. Our farmers have bedding plants and ornamentals that are ready for your garden planting now. Smoked meats, knife sharpening, handmade soaps and fresh eggs are available on some weekends.

Recently we have had a bee keeper come to the Farmers Market with his bees and honey. The man has a display of a honeycomb that is in-between glass so that you can watch the live bees at work making honey. It is a very interesting display. Not only can you buy fresh honey but you can also buy candles made from the wax of the honeycomb.

In the late summer months August thru October the Arts Walk is combined with the Farmers Market. This brings a whole new dimension to the market. Come watch the local arts and craft people as they make items that you can purchase. Some of the artist offer demonstrations and let the audience get involved.

I will say that this is a great way to start off your Saturday morning. So come on out and visit us at the Gretna Farmers Market located at Huey P. Long Avenue - between 3rd & 4th Streets in Gretna every Saturday, rain or shine under the covered Market from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Check us out on the internet at Http://
